Baking banana nut bread to keep warm
Last night I baked 4 loaves of banana nut bread! One loaf goes to my son and his wife, another goes to Stan, a ‘neighbor’ who lets me garden in his backyard, and one goes to the snack stash for my meditation retreat this weekend. The last loaf I share with friends.
I love baking when the weather gets cold. It is one way I heat my little apartment. You see, I don’t turn on the central heating for my apartment. The first time I did that when I first moved in, I could smell cigarette smoke coming through the vents and that was that. I duck-taped the vents just to make sure and turned off the heating system. When the weather gets chilly, I bundle up, putter around in the kitchen and start baking ginger bread, ginger shortbread, apple crisp or whatever appeals at the time. Really depends on what ingredients are readily available. Mostly it’s ginger and banana nut breads. I also make ginger tea to warm me up. I guess you get the idea I like ginger. When it’s really cold, I may turn on a space heater. But on the whole turning on the oven does the trick. And my apartment smells good to boot!
